India's September GST revenue rises 14.7% year-on-year to ₹2.04 lakh crore

What happened

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections increased 14.7% year-on-year to ₹2.04 lakh crore in September. Among major states, Maharashtra recorded the highest revenue at ₹29,986 crore (up 15%), followed by Karnataka at ₹13,884 crore (up 16%) and Gujarat at ₹12,222 crore (up 17%).

Why it matters

Double-digit growth across key commercial centers boosts fiscal receipts for both central and state governments. Stronger collections give policymakers broader budget flexibility without widening public debt requirements.

Bigger picture

The state breakdown highlights how heavily national revenue depends on western and southern industrial and service hubs. Economic performance in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat remains the primary engine for broader fiscal growth.
