What happened

India's Union Cabinet approved Minimum Support Price increases of up to 10.3% across mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 season. Wheat support prices rose by ₹25 to ₹2,610 per quintal, while barley increased to ₹2,286 per quintal and rapeseed-mustard climbed to ₹6,613 per quintal alongside hikes for gram and masur.

Why it matters

The price floors set a guaranteed return threshold for farmers prior to planting. Designed to maintain at least a 50% margin over estimated production costs, the policy protects farm profitability across major grain, pulse, and oilseed crops.

Bigger picture

Pre-sowing support prices serve as India's primary regulatory tool to guide rural capital and mitigate production risk. Setting baseline return targets helps influence seasonal acreage distribution across critical staple food and oilseed markets.

Watch next

Watch for acreage data during the upcoming sowing season to measure crop shifts among wheat, mustard, barley, and pulses under the updated price floors.
