What happened

India’s Finance Ministry notified rules allowing e-commerce companies to maintain inventory strictly for exports. Under the regulations, exported goods must be manufactured or produced in India, and Foreign Direct Investment in inventory-based retailing remains prohibited.

Why it matters

The decision allows e-commerce platforms and cross-border exporters to establish dedicated export inventory operations locally. It provides clear regulatory rules for warehousing Indian-made products prior to overseas shipment without changing domestic retail operations.

Bigger picture

The framework ties e-commerce export permissions directly to domestic production, using digital channels to drive global distribution of Indian goods while preserving long-standing foreign investment protections for the domestic retail market.
