What happened

Visionpower Semiconductor, a joint venture between TSMC subsidiary Vanguard and NXP, has opened a $7.8 billion 300mm wafer factory in Singapore. The facility expands specialty mature-node semiconductor capacity in Southeast Asia, and the joint venture is already evaluating a potential second site in the country.

Why it matters

The facility provides immediate mature-node output for Vanguard and NXP to supply specialized chip markets. Evaluating a potential second site suggests the partners anticipate sustained demand for mature-node manufacturing capacity outside primary production centers.

Bigger picture

The multi-billion-dollar investment highlights broader efforts by major chipmakers to diversify supply chains geographically and add resilient manufacturing capacity for specialty chips critical to industrial and automotive applications.
