What happened

The Government of India announced the re-issue and sale of four dated securities totaling ₹33,000 crore on October 1, 2026. The issuance includes ₹9,000 crore in 6.20% GS 2029, ₹12,000 crore in 6.57% GS 2033, ₹9,000 crore in 7.63% GS 2056, and ₹3,000 crore in sovereign green bonds (7.50% GOI SGrB 2056). The government retains an option to accept up to ₹2,000 crore in additional subscriptions per security.

Why it matters

The auction offers institutional and retail debt investors access across short-, medium-, and ultra-long-term tenors, including green bond allocations. By reserving up to 5% per security for non-competitive bidding, individual investors can participate directly via the RBI Retail Direct portal, supporting retail participation in sovereign debt.

Bigger picture

The multi-tenor auction structure supports government capital borrowing requirements while managing sovereign debt maturity schedules. Authorizing 'When Issued' trading from September 29 to October 1 helps deepen fixed-income market liquidity and price discovery prior to final allotment.

Watch next

Bidding will take place on October 1, 2026, with competitive submissions closing at 11:30 a.m. The RBI will announce the results the same day, with settlement scheduled for October 5, 2026.
