Dutch central bank shifts 86 tonnes of gold toward London for crisis liquidity

What happened

De Nederlandsche Bank rebalanced about 86 tonnes of gold from North America toward London between March and August. It sold about 59 tonnes in New York and bought compliant bars in London, while more than 27 tonnes were physically rotated through its Zeist vault. Total reserves remained 612.4 tonnes.

Why it matters

Gold held at the Bank of England meets modern international trading standards and can be accessed more quickly in a severe crisis. DNB says the change improves both liquidity and risk distribution without reducing the country’s gold holdings.

Bigger picture

London’s share of Dutch reserves rose from 18.1% to 32.1%, while New York and Ottawa each fell to 18.5% and Zeist stayed at 30.8%. The operation combined financial rebalancing with physical transport rather than moving all 86 tonnes as bars.

Watch next

Watch DNB’s future disclosures for another relocation; it says experience with both methods could help if a crisis restricts one route.
