India's Government e-Marketplace plans AI integration and infrastructure expansion

What happened

Mihir Kumar, CEO of India’s Government e-Marketplace (GeM), announced the public procurement platform's next growth phase after reaching ₹20 lakh crore in Gross Merchandise Value. The updated roadmap prioritizes AI and predictive analytics, broader participation from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and deeper digital public infrastructure (DPI) integration.

Why it matters

The expanded platform aims to give MSMEs broader direct access to public sector procurement contracts. Integrating predictive AI tools into high-volume government purchasing is intended to reduce administrative friction and speed up transaction processing for suppliers.

Bigger picture

India continues to leverage its digital public infrastructure framework to modernize state-led commerce. Combining DPI with AI tools offers a potential blueprint for emerging economies seeking to digitize public spending while lowering entry barriers for smaller businesses.
