What happened

PTI, published by ETGovernment on 19 October, reports that MeitY sent Meta an advisory dated 10 October. It asks the company to review recommendation systems so misleading or out-of-context material is not disproportionately amplified, provide context for visuals and report the measures taken.

Why it matters

Recommendation systems influence what users see, not just what a platform removes. The advisory puts pressure on Meta's ranking and moderation practices, but it should not be confused with a new statutory requirement to redesign its algorithms.

Bigger picture

The report places the request alongside existing intermediary obligations under the IT Act and IT Rules. It also quotes a digital-rights advocate describing the advisory as non-binding while raising censorship concerns. The government's request, existing legal duties and those concerns are distinct.

Watch next

Watch Meta's response, any disclosed ranking or moderation changes and whether MeitY issues a separate formal direction with a stated legal basis.
