What happened

India's Ministry of Finance reduced export duties on diesel to ₹16 per litre and aviation turbine fuel to ₹10.5 per litre, effective Oct. 1. The changes were implemented following the government's routine fortnightly review of petroleum levies.

Why it matters

The duty cuts lower export costs for domestic refiners shipping fuel to overseas markets, improving net realization margins on international sales. These tax adjustments directly influence the price competitiveness of Indian refined products abroad.

Bigger picture

India uses variable duty adjustments rather than fixed long-term export taxes to manage domestic fuel availability and respond to global market conditions. This flexible structure allows trade policy to recalibrate continuously alongside international oil price swings.

Watch next

The Ministry of Finance's next fortnightly review, which will indicate whether these duty rates are maintained, adjusted further, or restored.
