Sunrun partners with Voltus to supply residential battery capacity to AI data centers

What happened

Residential solar provider Sunrun has partnered with energy technology platform Voltus to aggregate distributed residential solar-plus-battery systems. Under the agreement, Voltus will pool Sunrun's home battery installations to deliver firm power to grid-constrained data centers supporting artificial intelligence hyperscalers. The initiative specifically targets service regions managed by grid operators PJM Interconnection and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO).

Why it matters

The deal provides AI hyperscalers with a decentralized source of firm electricity to bypass local capacity bottlenecks in PJM and MISO territories. By aggregating distributed residential storage into a unified capacity block, Sunrun can supply reliable power to high-demand computing facilities while helping mitigate localized power availability constraints.

Bigger picture

Surging power demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure is straining regional electricity grids. Deploying aggregated residential solar-plus-battery systems to support large commercial facilities illustrates how energy companies are evolving virtual power plants to alleviate grid congestion and manage peak loads during the broader energy transition.

Watch next

Watch for disclosures regarding total megawatt capacity delivered under the partnership, along with implementation timelines across the PJM and MISO power markets.
