What happened

Brent crude dropped more than 6.5% to $105.55 a barrel on Monday, the lowest level since October 16. The decline follows reports of potential diplomatic breakthroughs in the US-Israel conflict with Iran, alongside President Trump's vow to end the hostilities quickly following talks with Benjamin Netanyahu.

Why it matters

The drop in oil prices spurred gains for airline stocks and lowered government borrowing costs. Meanwhile, Ryanair warned it may freeze worker pay and increase airfares if fuel costs rise by 2 billion euros in 2028 due to the ongoing conflict.

Bigger picture

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to act as a primary driver of volatility across global commodity markets, airline operating expenses, and macroeconomic indicators including sovereign borrowing costs.
