DRDO develops indigenous Gallium Nitride technology for defense applications, according to India's Defence Ministry

What happened

According to the Defence Ministry, India's DRDO has developed indigenous Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology to generate, amplify, receive, and control high-frequency signals. The breakthrough is designed for next-generation defense hardware, specifically enhancing radar capabilities and electronic warfare systems.

Why it matters

Localizing GaN components provides native hardware capabilities across high-frequency defense applications. The technology can be deployed directly across electronic warfare, radar, communications, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and unmanned systems, reducing reliance on imported components.

Bigger picture

Domestic production of advanced signal-processing components supports broader defense self-reliance initiatives. Securing indigenous manufacturing for these critical electronics helps protect defense supply chains against reliance on external suppliers.
