What happened

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation completed high-altitude flight trials for its Kaveri dry engine in Russia. Testing achieved a peak dry thrust of 48.5 kilonewtons (kN), surpassing the 46 kN target and clearing the engine for integration into India's planned Ghatak stealth unmanned combat aerial vehicle.

Why it matters

Exceeding the thrust benchmark provides India with a viable domestic propulsion option for stealth drones. This addresses long-standing technological bottlenecks in indigenous military aviation programs and reduces reliance on foreign engine suppliers for uncrewed platforms.

Bigger picture

Relying on Russian facilities for high-altitude testing highlights cross-border defense cooperation in aerospace certification, even as India seeks greater self-reliance in manufacturing critical military hardware.

What happened

Air Liquide is investing over €170 million to build ultra-pure gas production infrastructure in Japan. The facility will support an expanding regional manufacturing footprint for a semiconductor maker producing advanced logic chips for artificial intelligence applications.

Why it matters

Ultra-pure industrial gases are critical, non-substitutable inputs for advanced chip fabrication. Establishing localized gas infrastructure gives expanding fabrication plants the reliable supply required to sustain high-yield chip production.

Bigger picture

Industrial gas suppliers are aligning capital spending with global efforts to build out regional semiconductor ecosystems. Supporting supply chains—including specialized chemicals and gases—must scale in parallel with primary fab construction to make local manufacturing hubs viable.

Watch next

Construction timelines for the new facility and potential disclosures identifying the partner semiconductor manufacturer's Japanese expansion plans.
