What happened

The Reserve Bank of India accepted ₹25,000 crore in its Open Market Operation bond sale on September 28, 2026, drawing ₹67,655 crore in total bids across six government securities. Institutional demand was heaviest for 2032 maturities, led by ₹14,350 crore accepted in 6.54% GS 2032 bonds. Cut-off yields ranged between 6.6676% and 7.1021%.

Why it matters

The auction was nearly 2.7 times oversubscribed, signaling strong institutional appetite for Indian sovereign debt. Absorbing ₹25,000 crore in surplus liquidity upon settlement prevents excess cash from depressing short-term money market interest rates below policy targets.

Bigger picture

Central banks use OMO asset sales to fine-tune financial system liquidity without altering baseline interest rates. Selling securities directly from its balance sheet allows the RBI to mop up commercial bank reserves and maintain tight operational control over broader monetary conditions.

Watch next

Settlement occurs on September 29, 2026, when the ₹25,000 crore cash drain from the banking system takes effect.
