What happened

Six Yamuna basin states have signed an agreement resolving an eight-year dispute over the 422-MW Kishau Multipurpose Project. Signed under Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil, the pact clears the path for a project designed to irrigate 97,000 hectares and generate 1,476 million units of hydropower, with Delhi set as the primary beneficiary.

Why it matters

The pact unlocks long-stalled water and power infrastructure across northern India, helping stabilize regional power supplies and improve agricultural water access. While Delhi secures long-term municipal water supplies, participating states such as Rajasthan gain allocations to mitigate local water deficits.

Bigger picture

Resolving complex inter-state water disputes in India frequently requires central coordination. The breakthrough illustrates how federal intervention can align competing state interests to advance large-scale infrastructure projects bridging both agricultural irrigation and clean energy generation.

Watch next

Watch for implementation milestones, including construction timelines, financial allocations, and formal agreements defining specific water and electricity distribution schedules among the signatory states.
