What happened

India’s Central Electricity Authority proposed draft regulations requiring new renewable energy projects starting in 2027 to integrate co-located battery storage and grid-forming inverters. The rules aim to maintain power grid stability as the country expands its renewable generation capacity.

Why it matters

If finalized, the rule will require developers building utility-scale solar and wind assets in India to alter project designs and capital spending. Mandating storage and advanced inverters upfront raises project costs but helps mitigate integration bottlenecks across the power grid.

Bigger picture

As variable solar and wind power replace traditional generation, grid operators worldwide face mounting technical stability challenges. Regulators are increasingly combining energy storage mandates with advanced inverter specifications to make renewable generators actively support grid frequency and reliability.

Watch next

The Central Electricity Authority will collect public and industry feedback before publishing finalized technical specifications ahead of the 2027 implementation date.
